Lamborghini’s super-SUV could be getting a performance version, as if it needed it; Urus is already the fastest high rider we’ve ever tested, clocking 1.98sec 80-120.

According to an Instagram post, Lambo is now working on a ‘Urus Performante’, which will likely bring more power, less weight, tweaked suspension and some version of its active aerodynamics system. Think of the treatment Lamborghini gave the Huracan Performante or Aventador SVJ.

For reference, the standard Urus makes 478kW and 850Nm from its biturbo 4.0-litre V8. Why Lamborghini might be doing this is because quicker versions of the Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne, with which the Urus shares its underpinnings, are either here or on their way. The Bentayga Speed offers a twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 with 467kW and 900Nm while the rumoured Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid will arrive with at least 505kW and 849Nm.

Before the go-faster Urus dots down, a plug-in variant will debut in late 2019 or early 2020. That version will use the same 4.0-litre V8 engine paired with an electric motor to make 507kW/850Nm. The Instagram post says that despite the similar purported power figures, the hybrid and the Performante will be two different vehicles.
