Back in May, we learned Ford might be working on a Shelby-powered ‘Super Raptor’, using the V8 from the upcoming GT500. And it looks like those rumours could be true after all.

There’s a new report circling, which cites the usual “sources familiar with Ford’s product plans” so remember a pinch of salt. They reckon Ford is indeed working on a V8-powered Raptor, one that will go above and beyond the current twin-turbo V6 version. It’ll square off with the Ram Rebel TRX, which will use a Hellcat V8 developing 522kW. That should give you an idea of the intended power figures for Ford’s truck.

Interestingly, the new report doesn’t double down on the Shelby roots for the engine. While not mentioning a specific engine, if the GT500 engine isn’t in line for use, a supercharged version of Ford’s new pushrod 7.3-litre V8 is a possibility. We’ll see that engine first in the F-Series Super Duty, due late this year or early next.
