Ford Australia reveals supercharged Mustang
While American Ford fans are waiting with baited breath for the Shelby GT500 to hit showrooms, us right-hand drivers will be left by the wayside. So much so that Ford Australia has decided to fill the 520kW-sized void itself with the new Mustang R-Spec.
Ford Oz teamed up with Herrod Performance to build the Muzzy, with the latter bolting a supercharger to Ford’s 5.0-litre V8. Final power figures are still being confirmed but it’s expected to break the 520kW (700hp) barrier along with 830Nm of torque. It’ll sound the part too, with Herrod’s own exhaust system coming standard with Quiet, Normal, Sport, and Track modes.
That power will be routed through a six-speed manual transmission to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S-wrapped rear wheels.
Ride height has been dropped by 20mm while thicker stabiliser bars at both ends should keep everything planted and under control.
Inside is surprisingly standard, with the stock Ford steering wheel still front and centre along with driver assist tech like AEB, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and self-levelling headlights.
"We have been working hard with Herrod Performance to deliver a supercharged Mustang to Australian customers", said Ford Australia and New Zealand CEO and President, Kay Hart. "Now, working with Herrod Performance, we’ve been able to bring this special edition Mustang to Australian customers through our extensive dealership network, and with the peace of mind of five-year, unlimited kilometre warranties backed by Ford and Herrod."
Only 500 R-Specs will be built, all currently destined for Australian driveways. If you want a 520kW Mustang here, check out our local review of the Roush RS 3.
