Remember at the end of Back to the Future, where Doc Brown picks up Marty and they fly off into the next decade? According to Elon Musk, the upcoming Tesla Roadster will do exactly that, minus the time travel.

A 0-100km/h time of sub-two seconds and 1000km of range were already pretty wild claims, but at least those were plausible. Hovering? We’re not so sure.

While a lot of Twitter users thought Musk was joking, he later said he’s serious, and that the hover system will use SpaceX cold gas thruster technology.

Funnily enough, Musk already hinted at flight in a tweet from June 2018. He detailed an options package for the Roadster that would add ten small rocket thrusters placed seamlessly around the car which will improve top speed, acceleration, cornering, braking and "Maybe they will even allow a Tesla to fly...".

The new Roadster will be available from 2020 at a cool base price of $US200,000 - for the first 1000 produced. Following that, the sticker price levitates to $250,000.
