Toyota recently took the covers off the ninth-generation HiLux, revealing a bold new design language that was led by the team in Melbourne.
Alongside this new styling, Toyota also revealed news about the all-electric version of the HiLux, which will be arriving after the regular diesel and hybrid-powered models launch early next year.

In this release, Toyota’s local arm remained tight-lipped about the details of this upcoming all-electric HiLux, stating that we’ll know “more details on the BEV early in the new year.”
Despite this, Toyota Europe revealed a lot more details of this upcoming electric ute, such as driving range, payload, and towing capacity.
Before we dive into these details, it’s worth noting these are European specifications, so can change before the New Zealand details are released, but it’s unlikely they will differ by a significant margin.
Powering the electric HiLux is a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. It gets an electric motor on the front and rear axles, providing a permanent all-wheel drive system. The front motor produces 205Nm, and the rear motor makes 268Nm.

Pre-homologation data points to an approximate driving range of 240km (WLTP), a payload of 715kg, and towing capacity of 1600kg. As expected, this is down on the regular HiLux’s towing capacity of 3500kg.
It is also noted that Toyota has targeted best-in-class charging capabilities for this electric HiLux, which should minimise down time when working.
As for driving, Toyota notes that the electric HiLux’s Multi-Terrain Select system, which uses brake and torque control, is equivalent to driving low-range four-wheel drive in a traditional vehicle.
